Mastering Musicianship (M2) Vocal Lesson Program

The Mastering Musicianship Vocal Lesson Program is designed to offer students of the WHHS Choral Program the opportunity to participate in voice lessons taught by qualified vocal instructors right here at Western Hills.  Lessons are intended to work individual vocal study in areas of tone, vocal production and technique.

Meet the Teachers...

Casey Huggins Smith, a native of Fayetteville, GA is a DMA candidate at the University of Kentucky.  During her studies at UK, Mrs. Huggins Smith taught a private studio as well as the Studio Voice Class for non-majors through the University.  She also served as a Studio Assistant to Dr. Angelique Clay.  While living in Atlanta, she taught lessons at The Lovett School and was employed as a vocal coach at The Atlanta Girls’ School as well as maintaining a private studio.  In addition to teaching, Miss Huggins Smith has also musically directed several shows including The Mystery of Edwin Drood at Centre College, as well as Honk, Annie Get Your Gun, and Cotton Patch Gospel and served for four years as Director of Children’s Choirs at Embry Hills UMC in Atlanta.  Performance experience includes Mimi in La Boheme, Michaela in Carmen,  and Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus. She received her MM in Vocal Performance from Indiana University in Bloomington and her BM from Shorter College in Rome, GA.   

Tenor, Mark Kano, has performed opera and oratorio throughout the United States and internationally. Mr. Kano is a dedicated voice teacher and his students have been admitted as voice majors to various colleges and universities, have been finalists in the NATS vocal competition, and participated in summer music festivals abroad. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Middle Tennessee State University and a master’s degree in music degree from the University of Kentucky. Additionally, Mark has completed all of the necessary coursework towards the doctorate of musical arts degree in voice performance at the University of Kentucky. Mark recently served as coordinator for the Schmidt Youth Vocal Competition and as Visiting Instructor of Voice at the University of Kentucky. He is currently an Instructor of Voice at Centre College in Danville, KY, serves on the voice faculty at the KY Governor’s School for the Arts, and is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).
